Consultation Services: Developing Your Rural Competency
-
Dr. Laura Friesen, Registered Psychologist
Laura has conducted extensive research in the specialty area of rural psychology over many years. She has a rural background and experience working with rural clients. She is a firm believer that to work with unique cultural groups, providers should engage in continuing competency activities. Consultation is one of those activities and she is passionate about sharing what she has learned about rural practice with other providers to improve services. Laura is currently the chair of the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta’s Rural & Northern community of practice. Laura’s most recent study was on how to develop relationships with rural clients when providers are outsiders. The exciting findings are relevant for urban and rural practitioners, especially given the explosion of telepsychology services.

Entering a rural community as an outsider? Working with rural clients at a distance? Looking to increase your rural culture competency? Want to talk about rural ethics?
Rural communities have an insider cultural context. Coming in as an outsider can be challenging. Rural communities have cultures with norms and values that have been found to often be different from those in urban centres. If you are working with rural clients and looking to increase your competency, consultation might be right for you.
